How to Use Flashcards on QuizGenius (The Right Way)

Flashcards on QuizGenius aren't just digital index cards — they're generated from your actual documents and designed for active recall. Here's how to use them effectively to build real long-term memory.

Why Flashcards Work (When Done Right)

Traditional flashcards fail because people use them passively — flipping through the same deck over and over without actually testing themselves. Real flashcard-based learning is about active recall: forcing your brain to produce an answer before revealing it.

QuizGenius flashcards are designed for this. They're generated from your documents and structured for genuine retrieval practice, not passive review.

How to Generate Flashcards from a Document

  1. Go to the Dashboard and upload a document (PDF, DOCX, image, etc.) — or select an existing one from My Documents.
  2. Once your document is loaded, look for the "Flashcards" option in the question type selector.
  3. Set your preferred question count (e.g. 10–20 flashcards for a focused session).
  4. Click "Generate".

The AI reads your document and creates a set of flashcard-style questions — each one designed to test a distinct concept from the material.

How to Study with Flashcards

When you open your flashcard session:

  1. You'll see the front of the card — a question or term.
  2. Think of your answer (say it out loud or write it down — this matters).
  3. Click "Reveal" to see the answer on the back.
  4. Rate yourself: Got it or Missed it.

This rating is important — it tells the system which concepts you're solid on and which need more work.

How Flashcards Fit Into Your Bigger Study Plan

Flashcards are not a complete study strategy on their own. Here's how to integrate them:

When to Use FlashcardsWhat to Do
First pass (new material)Generate 15–20 cards, go through them once to identify gaps
Review session (24 hrs later)Re-run the same cards, rate yourself honestly
Before an examFocus only on cards you've previously missed
Spaced repetitionReturn to the deck every 2–3 days, reducing frequency as you improve

The key is spacing — returning to the same material after a day, then a few days, then a week. Each return prevents the forgetting curve from erasing what you learned.

Generating Flashcards from a Topic (No Document Needed)

Don't have a document? You can still create flashcards using Learn Mode:

  1. Go to the Learn page.
  2. Type any topic (e.g. "Organic Chemistry: Functional Groups").
  3. After the outline is generated, click "Quick Test".
  4. Select Flashcard as the question type.
  5. Start your session.

This is great for subjects where you don't have a specific textbook — just type the topic and QuizGenius builds the flashcards from scratch.

Saving Flashcard Results

After each session:

  • Your score and performance data are saved to your history automatically.
  • You can retake the same set later to measure improvement.
  • Access past sessions from Saved Tests in your sidebar.

Tracking your improvement over multiple sessions is one of the clearest ways to see evidence that spaced repetition is working.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Flashcards

  • Go through the full deck once before re-studying only the missed ones. This gives you an accurate picture of what you know.
  • Don't create too many cards at once. 15–20 per session is usually optimal. Overwhelming yourself with 50 cards leads to passive reading, not active recall.
  • Use the AI Assistant after a flashcard session. Ask it to explain the concepts you got wrong — the explanation right after a failure is when your brain is most primed to absorb it.
  • Combine with Mind Maps. After a flashcard session, open the Mind Map tab on your document to see how all the concepts you studied connect to each other. This moves you from isolated facts to genuine understanding.

Flashcards are one of the most research-backed tools in learning science. The QuizGenius version just removes all the friction — no card-making, no manual scheduling, no lost stacks. Just open your document and start testing.
